Recently, the 60MW/300MWh grid-forming energy storage project, supported by Kehua, is about to be connected to the grid for power generation. Once the project is fully operational, it will effectively address the electricity shortfall in the region, enhance the integration capacity of new energy projects, and ensure the reliable and stable operation of the power grid.
Located in the northwest region of China, this project is one of the first grid-forming energy storage projects in the area and one of the highest-elevation projects at present. The successful implementation of this project signifies the strong technical capabilities and product reliability of Kehua in grid-forming energy storage technology in ultra-high elevation and extremely low-temperature environments.
Challenges of ultra-high elevation demonstrate extraordinary technical capabilities
The region is situated on a plateau with an average elevation exceeding 4282 meters, and temperatures can drop to an extreme low of -36.7°C. In response to such harsh natural conditions, Kehua has provided a complete grid-forming energy storage system solution for the project, including 120 units of 1250kW energy storage PCS. This product can perfectly match large-capacity battery cells and has high-efficiency conversion, flexible configuration, and grid-friendly operation features.
The product utilizes a three-level topology, successfully achieving a significant improvement in efficiency performance, with a maximum efficiency of up to 99.03% across the entire voltage range. It can efficiently store energy and provide a stable power supply in various complex environments. The product has a high level of protection, effectively isolating the impact of external harsh environments on the equipment. It can operate stably even in extremely cold environments of -40°C, significantly extending the product's service life.
Pioneering grid-forming energy storage project sets a new quality benchmark
In the face of the ever-changing challenges of the power grid, Kehua's grid-forming energy storage PCS has demonstrated superior grid-forming capabilities. The product utilizes virtual synchronous generator technology, able to actively support the grid with inertia, primary frequency response, and damping, achieving operating characteristics similar to synchronous generators. It meets technical requirements such as increasing system short-circuit current levels, enhancing system strength, improving frequency stability, and actively supporting system restoration. In extreme environments, the PCS can also provide fault ride-through, black start, and stable active and reactive power functions, achieving a 10-second 3x overload capacity.
This enhances the grid integration capability of new energy and new types of energy storage and promotes the transition of new energy from grid connection to grid-forming, providing strong support for power supply and new energy development in northwest China.
Super "power bank" for peak shaving and power supply promotion
The northwest region of China has abundantt renewable energy resources, and energy storage projects can compensate for the intermittent power supply of wind and solar energy, better storing and utilizing clean energy. The 60MW/300MWh independent grid-forming energy storage project provided by Kehua is equivalent to a stable "power bank" for the grid, storing 300,000 kWh of electricity at once and supplying 280,000 kWh to the grid. It can meet the electricity needs of tens of thousands of households, providing solid power support for local economic development and social progress.
This project underscores Kehua's leadership in energy storage technology, highlighting the commitment to innovation in energy solutions. As Kehua continues to advance its research in energy storage technology, it aims to contribute to global energy transformation and sustainable development.
