In recent years, grid-forming energy storage projects have evolved from primarily demonstration and regional initiatives to large-scale deployments, becoming a key supporting technology for the development of new power systems. In early March 2026, Kehua Digital Energy showcased its grid-forming solutions and shared several technological breakthroughs at two European exhibitions: ENEX Kielce in Poland (March 4-5) and KEY ENERGY Rimini in Italy (March 4-6).

 

These innovations exemplify Kehuas comprehensive capabilities in grid-forming energy storage technology, which include:

Grid-forming capability across the full range of energy storage products: their grid-forming energy storage PCS has passed full validation against 15 grid-forming indicators set by the China Electric Power Research Institute, covering key functions such as inertia support, primary frequency regulation, and black start. Kehua is the industry's first company to complete full functionality validation, laying a solid foundation for standardization and large-scale application.

Megawatt-scale energy storage systems with minute-level black start capability: Kehua has successfully achieved minute-level black start for energy storage stations. In practice at Pingtan, Fujian, Nanshan Thermal Power Plant in Shenzhen, and other sites, it demonstrated outstanding performance and stability, supporting rapid grid self-healing.

Multi-dimensional and multi-scenario adaptability: Whether in strong grids, weak grids, or off-grid environments, Kehua's grid-forming energy storage systems can provide excellent support and assurance. The minimum short-circuit capacity can be as low as 1.015, and the fault recovery time is less than 100 milliseconds.

 

Kehua has made significant technological breakthroughs in grid-forming energy storage and successfully deployed over 400 micro-grid systems globally, with total shipments exceeding 3 GW. l Integration of Renewable Energy and Grid Capacity Enhancement

The 1GW/4GWh project in Arongqi, Inner Mongolia, is China's largest grid-forming energy storage project, featuring an integrated AC-side solution by Kehua. This design simplifies installation and maintenance while reducing costs. A key feature is black start technology, enabling the system to independently restore voltage and frequency stability after a total grid collapse, thus enhancing overall grid resilience.

In Northwest China, a 300MW/1.2GWh grid-forming energy storage project uses Kehua's advanced full-domain integration solution. Operating in grid-forming voltage source mode, it balances voltage, frequency, and power angle stability, effectively addressing grid unbalance and improving stability and regulation. This serves as a replicable model for large-scale projects. 

l Hybrid Grid-Forming + Grid-Following Control

The 100MW/200MWh hybrid project in Minning, Ningxia, integrates grid-forming and grid-following controls, boosting ancillary service revenues and supporting local source-grid-load integration. It rapidly stores surplus renewable energy and discharges during peak demand, maintaining dynamic power balance. This model enhances renewable absorption and provides a scalable commercial pathway for energy transition. 

l Weak Grid and Off-Grid Applications

A 60MW/300MWh grid-forming project in Northwest China operates at over 4,280 meters altitude and extreme low temperatures, demonstrating Kehua's technology reliability in harsh environments and supporting high-altitude renewable integration. 

In Pakistan, a 20 MW microgrid equipped with VSG V3.0 grid-forming converters seamlessly integrates generators and storage. The system can replace generators as grid support when renewables are abundant, reducing costs and improving clean energy use. It also stabilizes voltage and frequency on weak medium-voltage busbars, ensuring reliable, high-quality power for industrial and residential users.

The BCS8000K~10000K-C-HUD/T8 Series is a containerized solution integrating a 1500V energy storage converter and transformer. The system employs grid-forming technology, providing additional inertial support and millisecond-level fast power response to maintain grid stability. It also supports Black-Start and Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) modes, offering multifunctional operation capabilities. Its integrated design and wide DC voltage adaptability make the system flexible and scalable, suitable for various scales and applications.

The BCS1000K~1250K-C-HUD series features online insulation detection, multi-inverter parallel operation, and black start capabilities. It supports high and low voltage ride-through, ensuring stable operation even in extreme environments.
